Møn and Nyord have been designated as the Nordic region’s first Dark Sky Park and Community. This means the area’s darkness is protected from light pollution, and local residents actively support keeping the night sky dark to ensure the best and clearest views of the impressive starry sky. The sight of millions of stars lighting up the sky and reflecting in the sea is nothing short of magical. Nothing – not even yoga or other forms of mindfulness – compares to this. Dark Sky is simply wellness for body, soul and mind all at once. Relax, be present and enjoy the moment right here.

Where and when can you experience Dark Sky?

Møn and Nyord are among the few places in Denmark where you can experience the Dark Sky phenomenon. From September to March, the nights are longest, making it an ideal time to enjoy the night sky, but Dark Sky can of course be experienced all year round. On summer nights, you can see the Milky Way as a wide, milky band of light stretching across the sky. In the warm nights of August, you can count shooting stars, and in autumn you can spot the Andromeda Galaxy as a small hazy cloud in the night sky.

Can you experience Dark Sky when it is cloudy?

Even when it is cloudy and the stars are hidden, you can still venture out into the night. The undisturbed darkness itself can be an unforgettable experience, where the senses truly come alive. Sounds, scents and a new kind of sensory awareness can be felt in a completely different way. If you want the full experience, you can join a night walk with a Dark Sky guide.

Three interesting facts about Dark Sky

  1. Dark Sky refers to a global effort to reduce light pollution, as most cities have so much light at all hours that it is no longer possible to see the night sky. In fact, up to 80% of the world is affected by light pollution.

  2. The light you see from a twinkling star comes from places many light-years away. The light has travelled for thousands of years. This means that when you look at the stars, you are essentially looking back in time.

  3. There are now several Dark Sky Parks around the world, but Møn and Nyord are the first area to be designated both a Dark Sky Community and a Dark Sky Park.
