Denmark’s largest and most beautiful hole in the ground is more than just an impressive landscape. It’s a time machine. Welcome to KALK – a truly unique museum in the heart of the Faxe Limestone Quarry, where you dig your way back to a world that existed over 60 million years ago.

A journey to the ancient seabed

Imagine standing on the floor of an ancient coral reef. Millions of years ago, this entire area was covered by ocean, teeming with exotic marine life. Today, the fossils of this prehistoric world are hidden in the limestone layers – just waiting to be discovered by you.

KALK is built around this extraordinary landscape and gives you the chance to feel, see, and understand the past. Grab a hammer and chisel and go fossil hunting in the active quarry. You might find shark teeth, sea urchins, crabs – or something entirely unique.

There are prehistoric treasures enough for everyone visiting KALK, and once you’ve found your own fossils, the museum will help you identify what you’ve unearthed.

History in your hands

KALK is a rare kind of museum – one where you dig up the past yourself. And where you’re welcome to take both your discoveries and your newfound knowledge home with you. At KALK, you’re not just a spectator – you’re a participant.

The museum also features inspiring exhibitions and stories about the cultural significance of the coral limestone in Danish history. Limestone from Faxe has been used in iconic buildings like the Marble Church in Copenhagen, and the story of life and people around the quarry unfolds through interactive exhibits and engaging activities for both children and adults.
