Mælkevejen Destilleri
Mælkevejen Destilleri was founded by people with backgrounds in the cocktail bar scene and in the sales and marketing of spirits in Denmark. With more than 80 years of combined experience in the wine and spirits industry, they have tasted their way through an impressive – perhaps even dangerous – amount of spirits.
One of our goals is to rekindle people’s interest in Denmark’s traditional spirit, AKVAVIT. AKVAVIT is an important part of Denmark’s spirits heritage, but in recent years it has unfortunately become synonymous with Christmas parties, drinking far too much in far too little time, and not least the attitude of simply choosing whatever happens to be on offer – because people don’t like it anyway!
No one has really taken the category seriously in the way they do in our neighbouring countries, such as Norway and Sweden. AKVAVIT is actually a protected designation – much like single malt and cognac – and must meet specific requirements. AKVAVIT is often mistakenly placed in the same category as snaps. Unlike AKVAVIT, snaps is not a protected designation, but is essentially a neutral spirit with added flavourings that is not redistilled.
In other words: SNAPS IS NOT AKVAVIT!
We don’t have a fixed dogma about the types of spirits we want to produce. What matters most is creating products that we genuinely enjoy ourselves. We want to push boundaries and challenge not only our customers, but also ourselves, creating products that give our customers those genuine “aha!” moments.
