KALK - Dig Into The Pre-historic
Travel 63 million years back in time – right in Faxe!
Faxe Limestone Quarry is not only Denmark’s largest and most beautiful quarry – it’s also a geological time machine that gives you unique access to a long-lost ocean. Millions of years ago, a tropical deep-sea coral reef thrived here, and today the area holds the world’s oldest known deep-sea reef.
At the edge of this impressive site lies KALK – Museum of the Faxe Limestone Quarry, where you can explore the fascinating history of this ancient sea and literally get your hands on the past.
Dig for your own fossils
KALK is a hands-on museum experience. Borrow a hammer and chisel and head into the limestone quarry to find your own fossils. Shark teeth, sea urchins, crabs, and snails are hidden in the chalk layers, and museum staff are ready to help identify your finds. Best of all: you get to take your fossils home.
From limestone to culture
Limestone from Faxe has played an important role for centuries – in construction, in local life, and in Denmark’s history. At the museum, you’ll discover how this unique material has shaped both architecture and community.
For the whole family
KALK is a lively and educational experience center where children and adults can learn, play, and explore together. The museum features exhibitions, hands-on activities, and plenty of space – both indoors and out.
